Review of Adelphi University School of Nursing

I have experienced two universities: Howard University and Rutgers University, prior to attending Adelphi University. I had great experiences with administration and professors at both prior institution. However, I was pursuing a major within Business and Labor Relations while attending those academic institutions versus the Nursing degree I was pursuing at Adelphi University.

Howard University was a great academic experience during the short time that I attended that institution, my only complaints that when I attended, (almost 10 years ago), there seemed to be a very slow process in procuring financial aid award letter and setting up a tuition payment plan with Cashier/Financial aid office.
Rutgers University was and still is a very organized University and during my attendance there, I had no complaints besides sometimes enormous class enrollment.

As a student attending Adelphi University's school of nursing I had a bad academic experience there; in which I would not elaborate too; besides the fact that the nursing administration does not, in my opinion, seek to encourage student advancement within the program and during my attendance, there was a subtle partiality in clinical placement and etc, to students in certain cohort programs. This university is a private institution therefore I believe the nursing administration failed its students by not seeking to procure and secure clinical placement for students to advance within the nursing program and graduate at a reasonable rate. The Spring Semester of 2012, students had to petition and make requests to the provost office for the school of nursing to seek preceptors and placements for students to graduate in the Summer of 2012 and be eligible to take the NCLEX in October of 2012. If students did not receive a preceptor and clinical placement for Summer 2012, they would have to wait until December of 2012 to complete the nursing program and be eligible to take the NCLEX by February. The school of nursing almost jeopordized 60+ students from starting their nursing careers in a timely fashion.

I am happy to state that through petitioning efforts a majority of nursing students were assigned to a preceptor and placed into a clinical spot for the summer.

I write this review to make you aware that I believe, based upon feedback from colleagues, that there are other nursing programs that are well structured and have high student satisfaction...meaning students are please with the nursing administration, professors, clinical availability and course structure. Also be aware that with the current nursing curriculum at Adelphi University, if a student in the nursing program withdraws from one course, they have to withdraw from them all.  Therefore if you choose to attend Adelphi University, I would not recommend working full-time, as so many students included myself did, and going to school full-time.

Although working full-time through most of my enrollment at Adelphi University and going to school full-time, I was able to successfully complete the nursing program with their old curriculum structure. However the curriculum has changed and I do not believe that with the new curriculum I would have had much success; since for 2 semesters I had to become a part-time nursing student because I could not handle the academic load. I believe that I most likely would not have such success while a student under the new curriculum since I would have been tempted to drop classes.

In a positive note: I loved all of my lecture and clinical professors that I had while a student in the nursing program. They are the best assets of Adelphi University school of nursing.

I believe Adelphi University is an excellent university; however the school of nursing administration needs to aspire to reach the standard of excellence that the rest of the University holds.

I wish you well on your journey for a Physician Assistant, Nursing, Pharmacy, or whatever health/science program you are seeking. Do your research!
